The Hamilton Turn-of-Century Collection

Artist’s comment...
The archives of the Hamilton Public Library were a great help in the preparation for this exhibition. In addition, many photos were taken in and around the city to set up a comparison study between the past and the present.

Due to growth in industry and increase in population, dust levels in our atmosphere are proportionately higher. This condition subtley changes the colour of our surroundings. Therefore it was necessary to find other locations where the air was less dense in order to bring credibility to many of the pieces, i.e. “View from the Wentworth Street Incline”, “Jolly Cut”, etc. as the atmosphere would have been during the turn of the century.

I tried to be as faithful as possible to the information researched without extending detail beyond the limits of the human eye and the perception of the mind in order to reach a semblance of third dimensional realism. Many of the figures in the pieces may appear at first glance to be stiff and unnatural. The fact is, they were, due to corset stays and starch collars. “Christy stiffs” (bowler hats) were worn on almost every occasion – even at the beach! It seemed logical to me that the pieces be presented in authentic Victorian frames. I hope I may be allowed this indulgence.

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to J. Brian Henley, ‘Heritage’ columnist for the Hamilton Spectator and librarian-custodian of the archives, for his valuable co-operation and assistance in this labour of love.
